| Twekobe
ready for Nabagereka
---
As the royal wedding draws nearer, Roko constructors who are
working on renovating of the Twekobe are working round the clock
to ensure that the Twekobe will be ready for the royal couple on
Friday.--- What you see is the Twekobe now and the Twekobe before
the renovation started.
It
will be remembered that Twekobe has always been a center of
attraction and pride in Buganda Kingdom. This elegant
building was built during the reign of King Sir. Frederick Mutesa
II, the father to the present Kabaka Mutebi. Like many other
cultural institutions in Uganda, Twekobe fell a victim to dictator
Obote's savagery when he attacked and bombed the Lubiri - Palace
in 1966. After
the overthrow of Obote by Amin in 1972 Twekobe, like many other
buildings in the Palace served as residence and offices for Amin's
soldiers who continued to plunder and destroy whatever little
decor that had remained of the Twekobe. It
was only until 1995 when the present government of President
Yoweri Museveni restored the cultural institutions, when the
Palace including Bulange and Twekobe were returned to Buganda
Kingdom. Dilapidated
as it has been for so many years, Twekobe has been a symbol of
unity and pride for the Baganda and a
show of love for their King. Many Baganda and friends of Buganda
have contributed generously towards the renovation of the Twekobe
which has seen this historical building regain its traditional
status in Buganda.
Twekobe
will be at the center stage during the forthcoming wedding of the
Kabaka. This is were the Royal couple will give a royal reception
to their guests before going on to the grand reception in the
Palace grounds for the entire Buganda.
Kabaka Mutebi, celebrated his birthday in a colorful
ceremony organized by the Buganda youth. This was his last
birth day celebration as a bachelor.
